The influence of Taranto (which is only 25 Km away) and its Greek civilization can be seen from the fact that ancient tombs with greek vases and coins have been found in the country. It seems that the rich Greeks from Taranto had farms and villas in the country between Lizzano and the coast. It is very well possible that they started to grow the grapes in this zone. Lizzano is composed by the city area (the old village) and the coast area, which is well-known as Marina di Lizzano. It represents a renowned summer resort in the south of Italy.

We suggest you to visit the following main places:

the Convent of Saint Pasquale, built in 1700
the Church and the rocky Crypt of Annunziata, between IX and X century
the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Gaetano, built at the end of 500 a.c.
the Lizzano Castle, of Norman origin, built about XVI century by the Raho family
the Chapel of Crucifix, near the Castle, in which you can see a statue of Sant'Elena, an ancient altar-piece and a paint of Jesus Christ wrapped up in the sacred sudarium
